The government tightens "air sanctions" against Belarusian airlines
From 00:00 on May 29, 2021, a ban on the use of Ukrainian airspace by aircraft registered in the Republic of Belarus comes into force.

“Restrictions on flights in Belarusian airspace and transit flights for Belarusian companies are necessary steps to ensure the safety of both aviation and passengers.

Now the team of the Ministry of Infrastructure together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is developing operational solutions in order to attract new transit air routes to Ukraine. We count on the support of our international partners," emphasized Oleksandr KUBRAKOV, Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine.

We shall remind you that on May 25 the government imposed a ban on direct air links with the Republic of Belarus by Ukrainian and Belarusian operators.

Background: the events surrounding the Ryanair passenger plane that was forced to land at Minsk airport on May 23. A Belarusian journalist Roman Protasevich was detained while the plane was at Minsk airport.

Execution of the protocol order shall be assigned to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the State Aviation Administration, and the state enterprise "UkSATSE". The State Aviation Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall, in accordance with the established procedure, provide appropriate measures and inform the relevant authorities of the Republic of Belarus on this ban.

International partners: On 24 May, EU leaders called on European air carriers to avoid flights over Belarus and to impose additional sanctions against Belarus "as soon as possible". The decision is not yet in force; it has yet to be agreed and approved by the EU Council at the ministerial level.
