| UkSATSE Became a Participant of EUROCONTROL Study to Improve the System of Air Traffic Controllers Selection |
Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise (UkSATSE) has joined a EUROCONTROL’s study on the concurrent validity of the FEAST Personality Questionnaire (FPQ) which assesses the personality traits that have been identified as relevant for becoming an Air Traffic Controller (ATCo). Thus, EUROCONTROL will also use the personality traits of the participating Ukrainian ATCos to set the personality standard for the future European ATCos.
Note. The FPQ is part of the FEAST test package (First European Air Traffic Controllers Selection Test Package) developed by EUROCONTROL for the professional selection of air traffic controllers that meet the established requirements for the level of development of abilities and personality traits essential for the profession. More than 200 ATC training professionals in EUROCONTROL member states participated in the FPQ development.
The outcomes of the FPQ validation will allow EUROCONTROL to obtain reliable data on the consistency of the FPQ profiles recommended for ATC student selection with the FPQ profiles of active ATCos of the European region. This will help to re-visit the personality profiles recommended by EUROCONTROL for ATC applicants.
Experts of the UkSATSE Human Resources Division involved 87 ATCos of KYIVCENTERAERO Regional Branch aged under 35 in the EUROCONTROL study that was run on the FEAST web platform.
Additionally, UkSATSE developed its local Questionnaire aimed to find out the number of FPQ questions that were unclear for participants as non-native speakers of English. The analysis of the outcomes of UkSATSE local Questionnaire showed that 96% of ATCos did not experience major difficulties in understanding the FPQ questions, and only 4% of the participants found almost half of the FPQ questions unclear. This suggests that for candidates with the 4th or higher level of English language proficiency (according to the ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale), the English language in FPQ is not a major factor negatively affecting the reliability of the FPQ results regarding the candidate strengths and weaknesses. UkSATSE provided the results of the local Questionnaire to EUROCONTROL experts for further analysis as well.
Note. Validation is the process of confirming compliance or giving legal effect. In operational activities, this is a procedure that gives a high degree of certainty that a particular process, method or system will consistently lead to the results that meet the pre-established eligibility criteria.
