The dynamics of air traffic in April allows expecting the growth of air traffic in the coming high season |
In April 2021, UkSATSE provided air navigation services to 13,661 flights, performed in the airspace of Ukraine. Compared to the period of the world’s pandemic spread out in April 2020, when quarantine restrictions were implemented in Ukraine and civil aviation flights were terminated, this April’s volume of flights shows an unprecedented increase of 476.4 %. But the real current dynamics could only be seen when compared with the corresponding period of pre-crisis 2019 year and it is by 43.4 % lower.
It shows that Ukrainian airlines performed 5,062 flights in April this year (40.8 % less than in the pre-crisis April of 2019) and international airlines performed 8,599 flights (44.9 % less).
The breakdown of air traffic by the flight types looks as follows: domestic flights – 1,945 (24.6 % less than in April 2019), international flights – 6,875 (-46.1 %) and transit flights – 4,841 (-45 %).
According to the Eurocontrol comprehensive assessment published on 15 April 2021, the decline in volume traffic compared to 2019 is demonstrated by all segments of the European aviation market, except for cargo traffic. The worst decrease was shown by the low-cost carriers, the scheduled and charter flights were also in drop, the same bad results are also for business aviation.
It will be recalled that the optimistic scenario of international experts on the resumption of air traffic is being corrected by a new wave of pandemics in the world. However, it can be noted that 12,160 flights were performed in the airspace under the responsibility of Ukraine in March 2021. This gives us a positive change of 12.3% in April (one and a half thousand flights more) with the beginning of summer navigation (air traffic increase in April compared to March).
Head of UkSATSE Andrii YARMAK: “The dynamics of flight resumption in Ukraine is better than the average in the Eurocontrol countries. Like the entire aviation industry, we look forward to the introduction of a vaccination passport, the gradual liberalization of quarantine restrictions all over the world, and an active summer holiday season. The Commission proposal to allow entry to the EU for non-essential reasons for all people who have received the last recommended dose of an EU-authorized vaccine has a quite positive look”.
