UkSATSE upgrades professional skills of air traffic controllers
Modern air traffic control training simulator is already in operation at Kyiv Air Traffic Control Centre

Today, on November 14, 2017 a new modern air traffic control training simulator for Strila-Alenia air traffic control system manufactured by Leonardo S.p.A., Italy was put into operation at Kyiv Air Traffic Control Centre of Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise (UkSATSE). The purchase and installation of the simulator is the first implemented contract financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in cooperation with the European Investment Bank (EIB) within the framework of the project of modernization of air navigation system of Ukraine.

Installation of the new air traffic control simulator will significantly improve quality and effectiveness of the process of professional training of air traffic controllers, in particular the use of enhanced functionality of air traffic control system after its modernization. As a result, the reliability of the air traffic management system and flight safety in Kyiv flight information region will increase.

- Growth of air traffic intensity and increase of level of automation of air traffic control processes create new requirements to professional training of air traffic controllers. The new modern simulator, which has been put into operation is absolutely identical by its functionality to the operational ATC system. It allows training specific activities in the event of any unusual situation in the airspace that may occur. This is very important for ensuring proper level of flight safety and for increasing the capacity of air traffic service centres, - said Dmytro Babeichuk, Director of UkSATSE.

The new simulator is equipped with 5 working places for training specialists of area control centre and approach control service, 2 workplaces for training air traffic controllers of airdrome control tower and 10 workplaces for pseudo-pilots. The simulator is designed for simultaneous training of 4 exercises, supports up to 6 scenarios of the airspace structure with the possibility to simulate observation information, obtain flow of flight data with complete simulation of sectors communication. Functionality of the simulator will allow training same situation several times with different combination of input data. This is a powerful training tool for prompt and effective implementation of new technologies, airspace structures, management procedures in the conditions of increasing air traffic intensity. For the training of young specialists, remote monitoring of the work of specialists in real conditions will be provided to demonstrate the best skills and professionalism of the decisions of experienced air traffic controllers. The simulator provides wide range of training functions, assessment of air traffic controller operations, recording and playing-back audio and video information.
