The Intergovernmental Agreement between Ukraine and Slovakia defines the part of Slovak airspace that is necessary for flights to Uzhhorod and the procedures and conditions for its use
The intergovernmental Agreement between Ukraine and the Slovak Republic on the conditions of use of a certain part of the Slovak airspace, which has been concluded today, was the result of a long joint work of specialists of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine and UkSATSE. This complex and important process, starting with the preparation of the Agreement text, its approval by both governments and finally the signing of the Agreement, is now moving to the next stage, which requires additional efforts from all participants so that the Uzhhorod Airport can finally resume full operation. Ahead of it, there will be national ratification of the Agreement by both parties and signing of implementation protocols, which will regulate technical issues of relations between Ukrainian and Slovak air navigation service providers, as well as interaction between relevant bodies of the Ministry of Defence of both countries.

As a result, air traffic services in the part of the Slovak airspace will be provided by the Ukrainian provider of air navigation services of Ukraine - UkSATSE.

“The agreement signed today will initiate more active cooperation with the Slovak Republic's air navigation service provider, with which we have established close professional contacts. During our working visit to Bratislava at the beginning of the year, our Slovak colleagues and we discussed future cooperation, including the coordinated and effective implementation of European standards in air traffic services. It is pleasant to note that our partners fully rely on proper technical training and high level of professionalism of Ukrainian specialists", said Andrii Yarmak, Head of UkSATSE.

It is well known that Uzhhorod Airport is located in mountainous terrain in such a way that the runway has a threshold with one operational direction located a few hundred meters from the Ukrainian-Slovak border and take-off and landing here is possible only from the Slovak Republic side, entering the airspace of the European Union. Only an air navigation service provider certified by the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) can operate flights within it. UkSATSE obtained the relevant certificate in 2018 and after entry into force of the agreement it has the right to provide services for air traffic in part of the Slovak airspace, as the national provider's activities comply with European standards.

On the basis of this intergovernmental agreement, cooperation between Ukraine and the Slovak Republic in the field of air navigation has been resumed, which was suspended due to the expiration in 2016 of the previous agreement.
