International Day of the Air Traffic Controller. Congratulations!
On 20 October the aviation community around the world observes the International Day of the Controller. Air traffic control is one of the world’s youngest professions. When air traffic intensity was not so high, the first ATCOs used — from today’s point of view — decidedly primitive equipment.

As more and more aircraft took off each year, so air navigation facilities and procedures became more complex. Today air navigation has developed into a highly sophisticated and technology-dependent branch that takes in air traffic service enterprises, vocational education and training institutions, research centres, equipment manufacturers and many other organisations. But despite the rapid development of new procedures and facilities in ATC, the air traffic controller remains the key element in the process.

The profession of ATCO is held in high esteem and respected throughout world. Ukrainian ATCOs are no exception in this regard. Their professionalism is recognised by the whole aviation community. More than three thousand airlines served by national air navigation service personnel and the year-on-year growth in traffic in Ukrainian airspace bear witness to this fact. During the first nine months of this year, 266 000 movements were registered in Ukrainian airspace, which is up 13.5% on the same period of last year.

The most active users of Ukrainian airspace are the domestic carriers Aerosvit Airlines, Ukraine International Airlines, Donbassaero, Ukrainian Mediterranean Airlines and Dniproavia and the foreign air companies Emirates, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, British Airways, Austrian Airlines, KLM and Singapore Airlines. With assets such as these we can face the future — which promises a great deal of challenging and important work — with confidence.

Congratulations to Ukrainian Air Traffic Controllers

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of UkSATSE staff I congratulate all Air Traffic Controllers on the day of their profession! I would like to wish all ATCOs many years of healthy, cheerful, energetic and successful work in the provision of flight safety in the Ukrainian sky. A humble bow also goes to our ‘veterans’ who, in spite of many difficulties, laid the foundations for the tenets and traditions of modern ATCO professional practice.
Health, wealth, and peace to you all!

Note. The Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) is the basis of the national Air Navigation System. It was established in 1992. UkSATSE provides the full range of air navigation services: Air Traffic Service, Air Traffic Flow Management, Airspace Management, provision of radio communication, navigation and surveillance as well as aeronautical and meteorological information for flight operations of all types. UkSATSE oversees five Flight Information Regions with a total area of 774 569 square kilometres. The total length of international routes in Ukrainian airspace is six times greater than ten years ago and now extends to around 50 000 kilometres. The Director General of UkSATSE is Yuriy Cherednichenko.
