Ukrainian airspace traffic soars by 12.6% in first half of 2006
In the first half of 2006, the Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) serviced more than 160 000 movements in Ukrainian airspace, which represents a total increase of 12.6% over the same period of 2005.

The total number of flights by Ukrainian airlines was 37 804 (up 6.38% on the first half of 2005) and by foreign airlines – 122 588 (up 14.6%).

As regards types of flight, the air traffic was distributed as follows: transit flights – 101 984 (up 11.9%), international flights – 40 632 (up 17.5%), domestic flights – 17 776 (up 6%).

The largest numbers of aircraft movements were registered in the following airports: Kyiv (Boryspil) – 36 854 (up 17.1%), Odesa – 5 983 (up 15.6%), Donetsk – 5 147 (up 16.4%), Simferopol – 4 566 (up 6.5%), Dnipropetrovsk – 4 108 (up 10.3%), Kyiv (Zhuliany) – 3 592 (-20.4%), Lviv – 3 356 (up 4.8%) and Kharkiv – 3 197 (up 39.1%).

The most active users of Ukrainian airspace during the period in question were: Aerosvit Airlines (Ukraine) – 9 368 flights, Emirates (U.A.E.) – 7 142 flights, Lufthansa (Germany) – 6 253 flights, Ukraine International Airlines (Ukraine) – 5 803 flights, British Airways (Great Britain) – 4 806 flights, Aeroflot-Russian Airlines (Russian Federation) – 4 735 flights, Austrian Airlines (Austria) – 4 666 flights, Donbassaero (Ukraine) – 4 038 flights, Singapore Airlines (Singapore) – 3 530 flights and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Netherlands) – 3 478 flights.

UkSATSE is continually upgrading its Air Navigation System to improve the quality of the services provided and the level of the technological infrastructure as well as working on enhancing the airspace structure and developing transnational air corridors. Statistics show that airlines are opting to use Ukrainian airspace more and more often when planning their international routes.

Note. The Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) is the basis of the national Air Navigation System. It was established in 1992. UkSATSE provides the full range of air navigation services: Air Traffic Service, Air Traffic Flow Management, Airspace Management, provision of radio communication, navigation and surveillance as well as aeronautical and meteorological information for flight operations of all types. UkSATSE oversees five Flight Information Regions with a total area of 774 569 square kilometres. The total length of international routes in Ukrainian airspace is six times greater than ten years ago and now extends to around 50 000 kilometres.
