UkSATSE Takes Part in Aviation Search and Rescue Exercise at Sea
Air Traffic Services Units of Odesa Regional Branch of UkSATSE have successfully accomplished all the assigned to them functions concerning the arrangement of a training exercise on the search and rescue of “injured” passengers of an aircraft that simulated ditching in the Black Sea at about 100 km from Odesa. A test of operational capabilities of the management bodies, search and rescue service and aviation search and rescue system facilities in response to a simulated aircraft accident in the Black Sea water area was conducted on 21 June 2017.

‘During the maritime search and rescue training operation, UkSATSE units ensured fulfilment of all the assigned tasks in accordance with the legislative acts of Ukraine and were awarded the top preliminary assessment. This exercise has once again demonstrated the ability of Ukraine to attain a high level of commitment to provide air navigation services in the international airspace over the High Seas and efficient search and rescue services in the handling of accidents in this airspace,’ said Ruslan HUTSAN, UkSATSE Deputy Director, Operations.

Together with UkSATSE, representatives of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and Marine Search and Rescue Service of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine took part in the exercise.

Aircraft AN-32P, helicopters Mi-8 and Ka-27P, sea rescue tug “Sapfir”, ambulance boat “Sokal”, search and rescue boat PRK-02 and several vessels of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were involved in the search and rescue operation.

During the exercise, UkSATSE units provided air traffic services, in particular alerting service which included collection of flight information regarding the aircraft state of emergency, recognition of the emergency phase and provision of messages to the appropriate organisations. Also, UkSATSE units performed general co-ordination, located the area of probable aircraft landing on water, participated in determining the search and rescue region, provided imposition of temporary restrictions on the airspace use by other users necessary for the safety of air traffic during the search and rescue operation.

‘In the aviation search and rescue region, aircraft and helicopter flights were controlled by the units of UkSATSE and units of the Ministries and Administrations involved. All the units performed positively, showed a good co-ordination and high skills during the search and rescue operation,’ said at the end of the exercise its leader Mykola YADCHENKO, Deputy Head of Aviation Department of the State Emergency Service.

We would remind you that aviation search and rescue in Ukraine are carried out within the framework of the Unified State System of Civil Protection of Population and Territories and National System of Maritime Search and Rescue.
