Traffic in Ukrainian airspace soars by 8.9% in 2008
In 2008 the Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) serviced 419 456 movements in Ukrainian airspace, which represents a total increase of 8.9% on 2007.

The number of flights carried out by domestic airlines rose to 95 657 (up 3.6% compared to 2007), while flights by foreign airlines totalled 323 799 (up 10.6%).

According to flight type, the air traffic figures break down as follows: transit flights – 264 067 (up 10.6%), international flights (with departure/landing) – 113 837 (up 10.4%), domestic flights – 41 552 (down 3%).

The highest number of takeoffs and landings were carried out at the following airports: Kyiv (Boryspil) – 96 997 (up 15.2%), Odesa – 15 847 (up 3.9%), Simferopol – 12 934 (down 3.1%), Donetsk – 12 355 (up 2.8%), Dnipropetrovsk – 10 795 (up 11.5%), Lviv – 9 630 (up 4.5%), Kharkiv – 7 945 (up 10.7%), Kyiv (Zhuliany) – 6 390 (down 44.4% - due to the closure for reconstruction works), Ivano-Frankivsk – 4 795 (up 83.6%) and Zaporizhia – 3 748 (up 3.3%).

The most active users of Ukrainian airspace in 2008 were: Aerosvit Airlines (Ukraine) – 29 307 flights, Ukraine International Airlines (Ukraine) – 17 416 flights, Emirates (U.A.E.) – 14 793 flights, Lufthansa (Germany) – 14 668 flights, Aeroflot - Russian Airlines (Russia) – 12 414 flights, Dniproavia (Ukraine) – 11 016 flights, Austrian Airlines (Austria) – 10 668, Turkish Airlines (Turkey) – 10 606 flights, British Airways (Great Britain) – 9 969 flights, Transaero Airlines (Russia) – 8 924 flights, Singapore Airlines (Singapore) – 8 569 flights, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Netherlands) – 7 262 flights, Thai Airways International (Thailand) – 5 054 flights and Malaysia Airlines (Malaysia) – 4 292 flights.

The continued upward dynamic in air traffic in Ukrainian airspace is associated with a high quality of services provided by UkSATSE. Constant modernisation and upgrading of the national air navigation system as well as airspace structure perfection are the main priorities of UkSATSE’s development. The transnational air corridors development shows that international air carriers are choosing Ukrainian airspace more and more often while planning their international routes.
