«My son studies to be a pilot. When I hear him on air, then my dreams will come true» - Serhii Shevchenko |
Conversation with a senior air traffic controller of UkSATSE control tower at airport "Boryspil", Serhii Shevchenko, continues the column "Quarantine for an air traffic controller".
I have been an air traffic controller for 12 years, now I am a senior air traffic controller. In general, I started working in UkSATSE on March 1, 1999. Aviation attracted me. Everyone wanted to be a pilot but I knew for sure that I would become an air traffic controller.
The air traffic controller has to be smart, calm, concentrated on his work. He has to predict the air traffic situation ahead. He must have an algorithm for correct action in any situation that may arise. I had eight aircraft on call at the same time. When you lose contact with the pilot, you can immediately switch to emergency contact.
At the beginning of the quarantine, we serviced mostly the aircraft that took Ukrainians out of Europe. And now we service mostly cargo aircraft.
On May 7, 2020, for example, we serviced 25 aircraft departures and landings, plus we still serviced 15 departures and landings of military aircraft as we have a common aerodrome with them. Before the quarantine we serviced 350-370 flights on average per day.
The number of air traffic controllers in the shift has changed due to quarantine, we divided the shifts in half: there are two cycles of work, we work on the usual schedule: day - morning - night, and then two cycles - in the forced downtime. We have 5 or 6 air traffic controllers working in our shift. We have less contact with other employees. When we come to our workplace, we communicate only with the specialists of our shift and the engineering staff that is two or three people. There are communication, navigation and surveillance specialists who monitor the operating system but they are in a separate room. If necessary, they come to us wearing masks to repair the system. They have masks, use disinfectants. There are no problem with that.
[b]We have been working with the Alenia system for almost 10 years - it is an Italian system, it operates in Kyiv Area Control Center.
Turkey said that it would start the tourist season from the end of July. There is a hope that charter flights will be performed.
I wish my colleagues good health, do not become despondent, the intensity of flights is to increase and everything will come right. |
