Traffic in Ukrainian airspace soars by 12.5% in 2006
In 2006 the Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) serviced more than 350,000 movements in Ukrainian airspace, which represents a total increase of 12.5% on 2005.

According to flight type, the air traffic was distributed as follows: transit flights – 222 258 (up 7.4% compared to 2005), international flights – 90 401 (up 4.1%), domestic flights – 38 459 (up 1%). In percentage terms, the total number of flights breaks down as: transit flights – 63.3%, international flights – 25.7%, domestic flights – 11%.

In total, 82 856 flights (up 2.1%) were made by Ukrainian airlines and 268 260 flights (up 10.5%) by foreign airlines.

The most active users of Ukrainian airspace last year were: Aerosvit Airlines (Ukraine) – 21 491 flights, Emirates (U.A.E.) – 15 369 flights, Ukraine International Airlines (Ukraine) – 12 766 flights, Lufthansa (Germany) – 12 615 flights, Aeroflot Russian International Airlines (Russian Federation) – 10 125 flights, British Airways (Great Britain) – 9 899 flights, Austrian Airlines (Austria) – 9 811, Donbassaero (Ukraine) – 8 406 flights, Singapore Airlines (Singapore) – 7 346 flights and Ukrainian Mediterranean Airlines (Ukraine) – 7 308 flights.

The largest number of movements was registered in the following airports: Kyiv (Boryspil) – 79 425 (up 17.8%), Odesa – 13 212 (up 14.7%), Simferopol – 11 829 (up 4.5%), Donetsk – 10 847 (up 14%), Dnipropetrovsk – 9 038 (up 9.8%), Lviv – 7 734 (up 14.4%), Kyiv (Zhuliany) – 7 692 (-14.8%), Kharkiv – 7 213 (up 46.3%), Zaporizhia – 3 874 (up 22.7%) and Mariupol – 1 976 (up 6.5%).

The continued upward dynamic of UkSATSE’s development is reflected in the growth in air traffic, which could not have occurred without the perceived high level of flight safety in Ukrainian airspace. UkSATSE is continually upgrading its Air Navigation System to improve the quality of the services provided and the level of the technological infrastructure as well as working on enhancing the airspace structure and developing transnational air corridors. All this serves to make the country’s airspace more attractive, and airlines are choosing to fly via Ukraine more and more often when planning their international routes.

Reference. The Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) was established in 1992. Its Director General is Yuriy Cherednichenko. UkSATSE is the basis of the national Air Navigation System and provides the full range of air navigation services: Air Traffic Service, Air Traffic Flow Management, Airspace Management, provision of radio communication, navigation and surveillance as well as aeronautical and meteorological information for flight operations of all types. UkSATSE oversees five Flight Information Regions with a total area of 774 569 square kilometres. The total length of international routes in Ukrainian airspace is six times greater than ten years ago and now extends to 47 145 kilometres.
