| Volume of air traffic services provided by UkSATSE in 2017 increased by 18.5%: almost 254 thousand flights |
In 2017, Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise (UkSATSE) provided air navigation services for 253,969 flights, which is 18.5% more than in 2016.
For the first time in the last four years, growth in the volume of air navigation services has been recorded after a sharp decrease in the intensity of flights in Ukraine's airspace in 2014 caused by the occupation of the Crimea and the commencement of hostilities in the eastern part of Ukraine.
In 2017, UkSATSE provided air navigation services for 97,252 flights of domestic airlines (which is 18.8% more than in 2016) and for 156,717 flights of foreign airlines (which is 18.4% more than in the same period last year), where 101,755 flights (+17.9%) are attributed to transit flights, 125,738 (+20.2%) – to international flights (departure/landing) and 26,476 (+13.1%) – to domestic flights.
It should be noted that in 2017, there was a marked traffic volume growth in the international airspace under the responsibility of Ukraine, the so-called "green zone", located in the western part of Simferopol Flight Information Region. To achieve this, the Safety Case, a thorough analysis of safety in the process of air navigation services provision, was developed in 2015. The outcomes of round-the-clock post-implementation monitoring with the involvement of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) confirm that Ukraine has taken effective measures to reduce the risk of hazards in this area. In 2017, 19,192 flights were performed on routes with special procedures for planning flights in the "green zone", which is 11.3% more than in the previous year. This is a significant result of the long-term work of UkSATSE specialists in co-operation with EUROCONTROL to recover the traffic volume in the western part of Simferopol FIR.
For two consecutive years now, the number of takeoffs and landings in the Ukrainian airports where air navigation services are provided by UkSATSE has increased to 172,725 aircraft movements, which is 18.5% more than in 2016. The largest number of aircraft movements was performed by Ukrainian and foreign airlines at the following Ukrainian airports: Kyiv (Boryspil) - 88,376 movements (+17.4% compared to 2016), Kyiv (Zhuliany) - 26,241 movements (+26.6%), Odesa - 14,325 (+16.7%), Lviv - 12,104 movements (+35.5%), Kharkiv - 8,322 movements (+25.6%) and Dnipro - 6,257 movements (-14.9%).
Ten major airlines that took advantage of UkSATSE’s air navigation services in 2017 were the following:
“Ukraine International Airlines” (Ukraine) - 57,205 flights (+16.4% compared to 2016);
“Turkish Airlines” (Turkey) - 27,606 flights (+20.4%);
“Belavia” (Belarus) - 14,537 flights (+13.6%);
“LOT Polish Airlines” (Poland) - 12,756 flights (+28.8%);
“Wizz Air Hungary LLC” (Hungary) - 8,832 flights (+57%);
“Wind Rose” (Ukraine) - 8,162 flights (+131.9%);
“Pegasus” (Turkey) - 5,825 flights (+35.8%);
“Air Moldova” (Moldova) - 5,527 flights (+31%);
“Azur Air Ukraine” (Ukraine) - 4,607 flights (+13.1%);
“Austrian Airlines AG” (Austria) - 3,751 flights (+17%).
An increase in the volume of air navigation services allows UkSATSE to invest in important infrastructure projects, important for the development of the national air navigation system, consequently contributing to the safety enhancement in the airspace of Ukraine. It also leads to an increase in assignments to the state budget and trust funds and is a guarantee of social protection of UkSATSE employees. |
