| The International Air Transport Association (IATA) Calls on Governments for Recovery of the Aviation Industry and Borders to Open |
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is calling on governments to work together to find ways to recover of the aviation industry and open the borders which are still mostly closed.
In its statement, IATA indicates that quarantine continues to reduce the demand for travel - during the peak summer period, four in five potential travelers stayed at home. As a result, there was no expected increase in flight volume.
According to IATA data, total traffic in July 2020 was 79.8% below 2019 level. International traffic in July 2020 was 91.9% lower than in July 2019.
The IATA statement notes, in particular, that the world remains closed to air travel despite the existence of protocols that enable aviation industry safe recovery. It is about a document - ICAO Take-off guidance - developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO). This guidance covers all aspects of the passenger journey and recommends sanitary measures to keep travelers safe and reduce the risk of importing infection.
“Ten percent of the global economy is sustained by travel and tourism,” said Alexandre de Juniac, Director General and CEO of IATA.
This is why an aviation return to normal life is essential to the global economy recovery.
IATA also emphasizes that, for aviation, risk management is a well-developed discipline that airlines rely on to keep travel safe and secure.
IATA has proposed three-point action plan for governments to safely re-open borders. |
